Abstract

The gap between religious understanding and students’ everyday behavior indicates that mastery of religious knowledge does not always lead to positive habits and moral conduct. This study aims to analyze the position of behaviorist theory in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) and formulate a model connecting habituation with students’ character formation. This non-empirical qualitative library research employed content analysis of primary works underlying behaviorist theory and Islamic education, complemented by recent scholarly articles published between 2016 and 2026. The findings show that stimulus-response principles, repetition, reinforcement, shaping, and modeling correspond with Islamic educational concepts such as riyadhah, mujahadah, tadarruj, and uswah hasanah. These principles can support the development of worship skills, discipline, and positive behavioral habits. However, their application presents limitations when habituation relies excessively on material rewards, potentially shifting religious practice from internal awareness toward external motivation. Based on this synthesis, the study proposes a behavioristic-tarbawi model comprising stimulus arrangement and role modeling, guided habituation, meaningful reinforcement, and internalization of intention. Within this model, behaviorism functions as a pedagogical instrument for behavioral formation rather than an ontological foundation of Islamic education. The model provides a framework for PAI teachers to move beyond behavioral compliance toward independent religious awareness, although empirical testing is still required to establish its effectiveness across learning contexts.
